Melakwa Lake – Snoqualmie Region

Updated: Jan 8, 2019

Elevation Gain: 2,500 ft

Round-trip distance: 8.5 miles

Northwest Forest Pass

Getting there: Melakwa Lake trailhead is roughly an hour (about 50 miles) from Seattle Pacific University via I-90E. Take exit 47 for Denny Creek/Tinkam Road. Top of the ramp, turn left. Then follow signs for Denny Creek trail by turning right. (If you turn left, you will go to Granite Mt or Pratt Lake) It is in the same vicinity as Franklin Falls and Denny Creek Campgrounds.

Trailhead: This trail requires a Northwest Forest Pass, however there is a self-issue day pass station when you arrive at the trailhead. Be sure to bring at least five dollars in cash or in loose change around your car to place in the envelope. There is a restroom at the trailhead and at Melakwa Lake. Be mindful that all Alpine Lakes toilets are without walls or doors - meaning it will just be you and nature one-on-one.

On the trail: This hike is deceptively hard. However, the first two miles is with moderate elevation gain. Within the first mile or so, you will have to cross Slippery Rock. On a nice sunny day, you will see a truck full of kids and families here. Continue on the trail until you see the Keekwule Falls to your right. It is beautiful from afar, but you can also get close by taking the boot trail. You will see the small pools and waterfalls collect into the Keekwule Fall. Be safe. The pools are fun and safe for the most part, but the rocks are slippery and one wrong move can land you an appointment with your creator. Once you pass the waterfall, climb gets a little steeper. However, a few more miles of boulder fields and forest will get you to the top before the decline towards Melakwa Lake.

Further adventures: Melakwa is a backpacking destination, so feel free to pitch a tent and spend the night by the lake. The permits are free, but you do have to self-register at the trailhead. Sites are first come first serve.
