Outdoor Recreation Fashion

Hello ORPies! Through living in a global pandemic this last year, we have seen the closing of many businesses and cancelations of social gatherings which has led to many people trying out new hobbies. You may have noticed the rise in popularity of outdoor recreation. Specifically, you may have noticed a growing trend in hiking. Maybe you have even grown interested in hiking yourself, and that’s awesome!

As an ORP leader, I can say that I have led many first-time outdoor adventurers and it is such an amazing experience to see people enjoy the great outdoors for the first time. To my surprise however, one of the most common questions I receive when venturing out to the wilderness is not, “How long is this hike?” or “What kind of terrane should I expect to walk through?”, but rather, “What should I wear on a hike?”

Unfortunately, many outdoor clothing brands can be expensive which doesn’t make it accessible to many college students, especially if they’re first-time hikers and are just trying out the activity. Now I’m no fashion expert by any means, but luckily our SPU community does have those.

Chloe, an Apparel Merchandizing and Business Administration major and president of the MODE Fashion Group is here to tell you all about outdoor fashion and basic hiking clothes from a college student perspective! Enjoy!

Hey everyone! My name is Chloe Wozniak, currently a junior majoring in Apparel Merchandising and minoring in Business Administration. I am currently serving as MODE Fashion Group’s club president and will be again next year! So, join MODE!

When asked “how to outfit when hiking”, I immediately thought of creating a mood board that inspired and reminded me of the aesthetics, feelings, and activities of the outdoors that I resonate with. This was a great way for me to bring my thought process to life, and to make it really intentional since usually I process my options internally and in a much shorter amount of time. This doesn’t mean that every time you go on a hike you should create a mood board, but I’d encourage you to find things that inspire you so that if you are ever stuck while picking out an outfit, you can revert back to a strong foundation that you connect strongly to!

Personally, I don’t hike as often as I’d like to. However, whenever I do get outside, I always want to be wearing something practical, comfortable, and  that is emerging or on-trend. Now, this isn’t a guide to be “insta-worthy” because social media isn’t everything! It’s meant to help empower you to create and maybe try new things! A phrase that I live by nearly every day is “look good, feel good”.

With that said, I will be sharing the outfits that I’d wear while hiking and along the way, showing some styling tips and tricks. If you’re ever curious to know where I got some pieces, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

OUTFIT #1

  •  Find any sweatshirt and flip it inside out! The one here is a college sweatshirt that I found on Amazon.

  •  Pair with any colorful high-rise short, the one featured here is from Target.

  •  On top, you can add any t-shirt. But I went for a long sleeve crop top that is thin, can be layered, and comes in so many colors on Amazon.

  • Accessorize! I chose a suede baseball cap from Aritzia that I have had for years and faux-Ray Bands from Amazon. These come in so many colors and have been a staple for the last year for myself!

OUTFIT #2

  • Add some spring/summer colors! These leggings were on clearance at Target and the pink tank is from Amazon. Both these garments look and feel like high quality active-wear yet are budget friendly!

  • Wear any third layer (like a sweatshirt or light jacket), hat, and sneaker that are neutral, since you’re bringing in a lot of color in the top and bottom.

OUTFIT #3

  •  A simple black hoodie from Target and joggers from Old Navy (a total dupe for Lululemon!)

  •  Paired with a baby blue workout tank from Amazon (yet another Lululemon dupe!)

  •  Add any fun sneaker! Match with the colors of the tank you have, or the sweatshirt you have. - Tired of wearing a sweatshirt? Getting too warm while on the trail? Tie the sweatshirt across your body, mimicking a fanny pack! Elevating your look by styling the same piece in multiple ways can help you realize just how versatile your closet can be!

OUTFIT #4

  • Same thing but with biker shorts from Amazon! These come in so many different colors. So, if you were to have a different color tank top or t-shirt, you can have endless pairings!
