Tell me about yourself

I'm a senior studying Music Composition. My hometown is Turlock, California. I'm a planner, a day dreamer, and an encourager!

Have you ever attended an ORP event or rented gear from ORP?

No!

Why not?

I've kind of been scared to. I've always wanted to go on one of the easier hikes or even one of the climbing trips.

When you hear the word, "outdoorsy," what do you picture?

I picture a person with long hair, with lots of stickers on their reusable water bottle from all of the places they’ve been on hikes or camping trips. I picture a lot of dirt, but also green and plants as well.

What's your first or favorite memory of being in the outdoors?

My favorite memory would have to be the camping trips that my family would take when I was homeschooled to study things like geology, ecology, and botany. We would go to a local campground and explore the different parts of the forest.

What’s your favorite thing to do outside?

I really enjoy going on walks! I typically go to places near water, but just being outside is really refreshing for me.

What culture, ethnicity, or community do you identify with?

I am African American. My parents are immigrants from Ghana, West Africa, so more specifically, I am Ghanaian American.

How does your culture interacted with the outdoors?

My mom is not a fan of outdoor activities like swimming, canoeing, hiking, etc. Because she is afraid of water, heights, etc. But my father enjoys the outdoors and nature a great deal. All of that aside, in my culture, most people live on the streets, so they are naturally athletic people; A lot of their cuisine is from nature as well, with plant based or fishing communities all throughout the various regions of the country.

Do you feel represented in the outdoor community?

Not really...at all.

How do you think ORP can help make you feel represented in the outdoor community?

Perhaps hosting events with some form of ethnic theme? Collaborating with Multiethnic Programs to do some sort of outdoor activity or game that isn’t too athletic so that anyone could participate (#accessiblity) might be a fun thing! Also, outdoor gear can get expensive, and therefore, not a lot of the BIPOC individuals have a ton of access to that unfortunately, so it's good that ORP is cheap.

Do you think you are an “outdoorsy person”?

By the standard definition of an “outdoorsy person,” I would not describe myself as such. However, I appreciate the beauty of the outdoors greatly, and would love to have the chance to spend more time getting more acclimated to it.
