Beginner Hikes

If you're new to the great outdoors or are just looking for an easy way to get out of the city, this list will be your new cup of tea. While there are many worthwhile beginner hikes all over Washington, you will find that the trails listed here are a quick drive from campus, leaving you no excuse to stay indoors; avoiding venturing too deep into our surrounding mountains also helps avoid dramatic spikes in elevation from trailhead to destination, ideal for beginners. Each image is a link to its corresponding Washington Trails Association page as this is where we gathered much of our information and each page has other helpful tips.

Talus Loop

Length: 3.6 miles roundtrip

Elevation Gain: 1400 feet

Best Season to Visit: All Seasons

Distance from SPU: 50 minutes; 40 miles

Region of Washington: Snoqualmie

Another short hike, but one that is going to be slightly steeper than some of our other suggestions. This trail is really convenient as it is extremely close to campus.

Twin Falls

Length: 2.6 miles

Elevation Gain: 500 feet

Best Season to Visit: All Seasons

Distance from SPU: 45 min; 40 miles

Region of Washington: Snoqualmie

Even if you aren’t someone to repeat hikes, with two trailheads coming from different directions and a vividly lush landscape, this is a hike you will want to do over and over in different seasons. The trail can get decently muddy in the wet seasons, especially in the winter time, so wear some decently waterproof shoes that are easy to clean.

Rattlesnake Ledge

Elevation Gain: 1160 feet

Best Season to Visit: Spring through Autumn

Rattlesnake is a great hike to take a group of friends with mixed skill levels. It is just a short drive from SPU and provides some great views!

Heybrook Lookout

Elevation Gain: 850 feet

Best Season to Visit: Late Spring and Summer

Distance from SPU: 1 hour 30 minutes; 60 miles

While it is worth a visit any time of the year, we favor summertime so you can get the clearest views the lookout offers. This is a good hike if you are looking to get deeper into the Cascades while still limiting your exertion.

Thunder Knob

Length: 3.6 miles

Elevation Gain: 635 feet

Best Season to Visit: Summer and Autumn

Distance from SPU: 2 hours and 30 Minutes; 125 miles

Region of Washington: North Cascades

Thunder Knob is a great hike if you have the time for a longer drive and it has convenient car camping sights and a trailhead for backpacking destinations just across the highway! Be cautious if you decide to go in spring as snow runoff often floods parts of the trail.

Little Si

Length: 3.7 miles roundtrip

Elevation Gain: 1300 feet

Best Season to Visit: Spring through Autumn

Distance from SPU: 45 minutes; 40 miles

Region of Washington: Snoqualmie

This is another hike that leans more towards our intermediate category because it is slighty steeper than some of our other suggestions. However, it is still great for the beginners, especially in the warmer, drier seasons.

Heather Lake

Length: 4.6 miles roundtrip

Elevation Gain: 1034 feet

Best Season to Visit: Spring through Autumn

Distance from SPU: 1 hour 45 minutes; 60 miles

Region of Washington: North Cascades

Heather Lake is uniquely picturesque in all seasons. This hike is getting closer to hikes that our team considers to be intermediate level, but is still a beginner friendly trail, especially if you avoid the trail in winter when snow can cover parts of the path.
