ECONOMIC
BARRIERS
One of the most pervasive barriers preventing participation in outdoor recreation are economic . These can include anything from not having access to transportation, costs of travel, expensive gear and park passes, or even lack of time in a packed work schedule, etc. In this section, we will take a look at some research done regarding economic accessibility of the outdoors, as well as learning about some ways to combat this inequality.
Let's see what the research says:
This research article titled "An Examination of Perceived Constraints to Outdoor Recreation" highlights how “Outdoor recreation is considered a fundamentally important and beneficial element of many people's lives, and it is often used as an indicator of people's social well-being. However, studies have shown that certain marginalized groups in American society (e.g., Blacks, women, rural dwellers, low income, or less educated) encounter various constraints resulting lower participation in outdoor recreation.”
In order to combat economic inequality ORP:
-
Offers affordable gear rentals for students to be able to safely access the outdoors with adequate gear
-
Hosts outdoor excursions for free or at affordable prices
-
Ensures that financial concerns are not a barrier to student participation
-
-
Provides transportation to outdoor excursions
